Mainau Island
May 30, 2021
Mainau Island is known as the Flower Island and connects to Lake Constance via a short wooden bridge. It is home to the 2nd largest butterfly exhibit in Germany according to their website. The island is owned by Switzerland and is on the German/Swiss border.
We stayed at the Hotel City Krone in the town of Friedrichshafen. The town is located right on the water.
Booking entry to the island was simple, however we didn't know how to get there. I read that tourist catch the ferry across to the island, however I notice during my research that we could drive around to the short wooden bridge and walk to Mainau Island. When we put the route in google maps, it said we had to catch the ferry. This confused us and we weren't sure what to do. Should we catch the ferry or drive around? We decided to check out the ferry, but then had a change of heart, so we tried to drive around the island. Needless to say after about 1 1/2 hours we got to Lake Constance and the wooden bridge.
To enter the premises you needed a negative COVID test or a the vaccine. We didn't worry because we had the vaccine, but when we entered they didn't even ask us. Oh well. Our first attraction was the butterfly exhibit. We had to wait half and hour in line. Michelle loved the attraction as it showcased a variety of butterflies flying around.
We were hungry and wanted to find a place to eat. The island has about half dozen restaurants. The restaurant we wanted to eat at was closed, but nearby was a sandwich place and we ate there. Michelle had a cream cheese sandwich and I had a pork sandwich. Both were okay. I also ordered gulacsh soup which was the best soup I've had in Germany.
We finished our walk around the park and headed to the car.
