Eat The Street (Oktoberfest)
Eat the Street Oktoberfest - September 25, 2015
We decided not to go to the Hale Koa for Oktoberfest this year. Its hard to find great events for Oktoberfest in Hawaii. To put on a great event doesn't seem to be difficult if you get the support. However, with a small if any German community in the islands, I don't think Oktoberfest will be big here. I guess I have to save up my pennies for Munich one day.
We chose to go to the Okotberfest at the newly established Bar Pub Taps and Apps in Mililani Mauka. Upon arriving, we were told that minors are not welcome after 5pm. Why? Maybe the place gets too rowdy. We were pissed, but I decided to take the family downtown to Eat the Street in the Kaka'ako area at the start of Ward Ave. Parking was a bitch, but we found a spot in the Ward Center Structure. We walked the quarter mile to Eat the Street. It was crazy packed. As much as its such a good event, it is not a great event. Two big showcase items for this event was 1) the beer area 2) Wurst Wagon. The beer area was stupid. Small space and overcrowded. Line was too long, about a 45 minute wait for a beer. Just stupid. The Wurst Wagon line was too long as well. Over 1 hour wait. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. Our bratwurst was cold and undercooked. It did look appetizing, but the authenticity was shit. Closest thing to authentic was the spaetzle, but Michelle can make much better speatzle. In retrospect the Hale Koa has the closest authentic German food in the islands, and even that is kinda not the greatest.
One highlight of the event was a food truck called Aloha Plates. They won the food truck challenge on the Food Network a year ago. For some reason I missed that season, not sure why. Maybe I was too into running at that time. Lanai was there doing the customer service. The food was good, not healthy, but good. That was cool, the only cool thing of the event.
I probably won't ever go to Eat the Street Oktoberfest again. I missed out on the stein which looked pretty cool. But WTH, the event was so subpar that it didn't matter.
Since I didn't buy beer and wanted to drink (because that is a big part of Oktoberfest), I went to the beer store in Ward and bought (2) famous Spaten beer a.k.a. beer of Oktoberfest. I went home and down that beer, it was so good.
