Arlington Cemetery

JFK's grave

This huge cemetery is to honor people who served in the armed forces. What gets everyone about this cemetery are the thousands of rows of white tombstones. Almost all Americans have seen this visual before, maybe not in person, but somewhere, whether it be on TV or in print.

Our kids were dead tired just having landed after a 10 hour flight from Honolulu. And we would be walking, a lot.

The first attraction was the Kennedy graves. The main attraction is John F. Kennedy’s grave where there is an eternal flame which serves as a reminder that JFK gave his life for his country. The other Kennedy’s were near the area.

After the Kennedy graves, we had problems finding the Tomb of the Unknowns. It’s a huge honor to be a guard at the tomb. I found out that these guys actually sleep in a place underneath the area. The cool part of Arlington is the ‘Changing of the Guard’. This ceremony takes place every hour or so at the Tomb of the Unknowns. It’s a methodical process as soldiers change shifts doing an array of movements. I got some money shots with my DSLR. They also honor a handful of soldiers every day at the tombs.

According to the plaque that was there, unknown soldiers who died in war are picked by important generals or a committee to be buried and honored at The Tomb of the Unknowns.
