Leftovers

Leftovers

After we ate our lunch at Grandma’s 90th birthday, we of course had leftovers. Now when you are at a party, everyone goes through the line maybe once or twice. But then, there are usually leftovers in the sternos. Most people will grab a takeout container or a paper plate and make a plate to take home. The next day, you usually eat the leftovers for lunch or dinner. What I saw here was pretty nuts. Some of the guest at the party (remember my grandmother invited the whole town rich and poor people were included) not only take the leftovers from the sternos, they took leftovers from people’s plates. What I saw is that they grab a plastic bag and piled the half-eaten plates into the plastic bag and tied it. They do not waste at all. They even save the leftover bottles of water from party guest to take home. Talk about not wasting food. Although I think it’s pretty gross, two things struck a chord with me. When you are constantly wondering when your next meal is coming, like I think these people were, you need to find food to survive, if that means taking the leftovers from other peoples plate, so be it. Second, Americans waste so much, its fricken ridiculous! You realize after all these years, that people in other countries have much worse than we do. What makes it bad is that if we don’t want to eat something, we dispose of it, leaving it to waste. My mom use to tell me “make sure you finish everything on your plate, people are starving in India”. Not only are people starving in India, they are also starving in the Philippines.
