Winefest

September 7, 2019

Germany has the biggest beer festival in the world, Oktoberfest in Munich. They also have the biggest wine festival in the world as well, Winefest aka Wurstmarkt in a place called Bad Durkeim. Winefest brings in over 600,000 people over 2 weekends which is quite a bit of people. The trains are packed. Of course we took a train because we knew we would be liquored up.

Dr. Adriana and her husband Larry have been our partners in exploration and they bought our train tickets to Bad Durkheim. The train ride was about 1 1/2 hours. It was freezing cold today and it rained throughout the day. I've been struggling in the cold and its something I've got to get used to. On the train, beautiful vinyards for miles can be seen as far as the eye could see. I know I didn't know it, but Germany has amazing wine, they've been making wine here since the Romans occupied Germany thousands of years ago.

Two great things about this festival are the food and alcohol, which I wasn't surprise. The atmosphere here was also amazing. We walked around and saw found a wine tent. There were about 14 tents where people could sit, eat, and drink wine. The featured drink was this shorle, its 75% wine and 25% sparkling water. The taste is good and many people order this drink because it doesn't get you drunk as fast and keeps you hydrated, but after 4, you are messed up and pretty drunk.

It started getting busy around 3p. We ate a ton of food. Here were some foods we ate; flatbread pizza, pork knuckle, potato pancakes, sweet potato french fires, churros, longos, and much more. I heard the place gets lively at night, however we wanted to avoid the massive exodus, so we left at 5p. I think we left at that time. I drank so much that my memory is a blur.

This is a must event while in Germany. The event takes place at the beginning of September, admission is free. Because there is so much drinking, kids should stay home. However, the event is catered for children as well, but with all the alcohol, maybe best not to bring the children.
