Koloa Rum

Koloa Rum Tasting

Koloa rum has made its way to Oahu. Every week when I buy my alcoholic beverages at the local supermarket, I see Koloa Rum with the hard alcoholic beverages. While planning, I thought it would be a good idea for us to visit the plantation. After a few research attempts, I found that they have Koloa Rum Tasting. That is probably almost as good as visiting the farm.

The rum tasting is at Kilohana Plantation. They have tastings every 1/2 hour and its free. Can't go wrong with that. Get buzzed for free. When we got there, the line appeared long, but that was just one group waiting to get into the wine tasting area.

The gift shop is pricey. Everything is double the price. We left the kids to hang out at a table outside. Rum tasting was only a 1/2 hour. When we got in, the lady presenting to us had a unbelievable personality. She was very engaging. She knew how to draw people in. She was able to portray the aloha spirit and at the same time advertise the rum. She remembered everyone's name in the group, I think there was 13 of us.

It was a great experience! One of the highlights of our trip for sure. She had an uncanny ability to dive into the history of Koloa rum and make connections to all the tourist and even to us. We would find out that Koloa rum just started growing sugar cane, so it takes years to mature. They currently buy their sugar cane from a sugar mill in Maui. However that Maui mill is about to close, so operations might slow down for a little while until the sugar cane on Kauai matures. These are facts that interest me.

If you drink the rum straight, it is strong. It does have an okay taste to it. It really depends on the rum your drinking. The coconut one is good tasting and the premium one is good as well. The other rums are good for mixing.

I wasn't too drunk and drove us back to the Hilton so we could take a nap.
