Zombie Apocalypse

Zombie Apocalypse - October 31, 2015

Aprille wanted to do this, she thought it would be a cool thing to do. She advertised it on the OAG and Run Young Facebook pages, but in the end only Erik and I would join her. We signed up for the 10:00am heat. In theory this event seemed like a pretty cool thing to do, what's more thrilling than Zombie's chasing you?

I remember paying way in advanced for the registration. We did a run the Thursday before and tried to plan the logistics of getting to the event. We all agreed to meet at Erik's house at 8:00am. We would text Daniel that we would pick him up so he could watch us. Our post event meal would be at the Hukilau Cafe.

After meeting at Erik's, he drove us in his new Tacoma 4x4 towards the North Shore. I was interested in the big waves as there had been a swell coming for a few days. However, the waves weren't as big as I thought. The waves were surfable and I'm sure there were happy surfers out there. We picked up Daniel and headed towards Kualoa Valley. It was muddy, lucky Erik's truck is a 4 wheel drive. We parked and went up the hill to check in. We were super early and waited until it was our turn. Surprisingly not many people were dressed up in costumes.

The announcement for the 10:00am heat came and we waited for the horn to go off. It did, and we started jogging. The initial run is all uphill. We encountered the first wave of Zombies. They were just waiting and watching the runners go by. As we passed, I promptly asked them to chase us, Erik with his gopro captured the moment.

The first obstacle was a crawl net. It was easy. The second obstacle was the blood slide. That was a cool thing! It seems like it can easily be done. I remember Aprille banged into me and I lost my bib. As we continued on, the valley was muddy. We ran and ran. Later in the race, the Zombies were more scary. One time going down a mud hill, the Zobmies tried to scared us. Aprille tried to run away, but fell in the mud.

Near the end the Zombies kept on trying the scare us and some even chased us, which was cool. As we finished, we saw Daniel near the end taking pictures. We were all muddy and covered with fake blood. A volunteer was hosing everyone off, but with only one hose the line was so long. We had to wait over 30 minutes to get hosed off, the same amount of time it took to run the event.

After some reflection, we concluded that it was a great event. We wanted more obstacles and additional hoses to wash us down. Aprille didn't feel that she was clean enough, so Erik drove to Punalu'u beach so that Aprille could rinse off.

We drove to the Hukilau Cafe only to find out they close at 11:30am on Saturday. Erik drove us back at back up lunch plan - Papa Ole's. The restaurant was packed. I bought the Big J's special, steak with mushroom and onions. We stayed there for a while before leaving. Good times with OAGs!
