Honolulu Marathon

Holiday Season December 12-January 1

Honolulu Marathon & Expo

Like last year and the last 4 years, I've done the Honolulu Marathon during the second week of December. Training was intense and I had some problems with my hips. The planning for the event was always time consuming. The day before on December 12 - Erik, Darren, and I went to stage cars at Erik's cousins house and I drove us to the expo to pick up my packet. By the time we got home, it was 2pm. I took a nap. After the nap, Michelle and I went to Costcos to buy presents. I went to sleep after 9pm.

I remember waking up a little past 1am and got myself ready. My mom was going to drop us off at the start line. My mom always does the dirty work, its always been a big help. The bathroom was really long, so I went to piss in the bushes. There was no time to take a group pic, but I saw Thomas and Rebecca, so we took a quick photo.

The marathon started off well. I ran between a 9:45-10:00 pace which I set out to do. However, my right hip was giving me problems at mile 13. I continued running until mile 18 which is around Hawaii Kai Drive. I made a mistake of taking an extra break at the water station. My hip started to really bother me and I started getting cramps in both my quads. The cramps weren't too bad as I can run through it. But I had no answer for my hips and that was a problem. From mile 20-26 my time slowed considerably. I had a chance to beat my time from last year, but it was going to be tight. I struggled going down Kahala Ave walking a lot of the time during mile 21-23. But had a resurgence going up the hill to Diamond Head. I petered out near the end, but it didn't matter

My finish time was 4:42:57, 6 minutes slower than last year. Girls were waiting at the finish to present medals. The medals were awesome...really nice medals. I struggled walking to get my shirt. I needed to sit down. I checked my app to see if the others finished, but they didn't. I felt bad for them as I knew they wanted to come in under 5 hours.

I saw Ted and his wife Leilani talked some story, but I was so hungry. I went to get my malasada and food. My legs were so sore, I had to sit down. I checked my app and saw that they finished. I went by Ted and waited for them. We took a group picture. Erik called his cousin to pick us up. We had to walk the quarter mile to the bathroom.

I felt bad going into the truck because I fuckin' stunk. We changed at Erik's cousins house. Erik's cousin has the ultimate back yard; a pool, kitchen, shower - all outside.

The PRM was at Rainbow Drive Inn. $$$. I think every year we are going to eat at Rainbows after the marathon. I was so tired. I think we were all talking bubbles already.
