Kilauea Lighthouse

Kilauea Lighthouse

This wasn't open the last time we went in 2000. Efforts by the late Daniel Inouye made this project possible. Fish & Wildlife built a refuge at the Lighthouse, similar to Kaena Point on Oahu, only this one is far better.

Price of admission is $10 for tourist and $5 for Kama'aiana, kids under 15 is free.It is hotter than a mutha here. Add to boot, we were so tired already just flying in this morning. But we wanted to make this worthwhile.

Adding to the intrigue is the native flora and fauna. Lots of birds. Nene birds!!! One thing that was awesome was that the kids got to do something educational. To get a junior ranger badge, they had to complete a 2 sided worksheet. Let me tell you, it was hotter than ever and we had to do some walking to get the information on the signs to fill out the worksheet. Luckily, I knew a lot of the plants in the area, so I was able to help them on the first section. The birds section was hard and we went back and forth trying to find the information.

I needed a picture of Michelle and I, so I had Malia take one of us in front of the lighthouse. Yay! This place is worth the price of admission, just to see Nene birds is a great experience. We completed the worksheet and the kids got their badge.
