Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest - October 25, 2014
We finally did it! I always wanted to celebrate Oktoberfest, and today, we finally did it! Michelle reserved the tickets a few days ago on the Hale Koa website. The Oktoberfest at Hale Koa has been going on for years. We didn't know how to dress or behave. All we knew was that we wanted to eat and drink some German food and beer. That, is what we did.
We had some reservation about sitting with other people at the same table as the intimacy of a couples night out goes away. However, it wasn't too bad. The mood is festive and people are there to enjoy. There are no assholes, which was a plus. That's all we needed, one idiot to ruin the party. After getting settled, we went straight to the food line. There are stations, I believe there were 4 or 5 of them. There was also a soup station which featured Hungarian Goulash Soup. That soup was the bomb, so meaty and rich in paprika! Although all the food stations were German staples, we wanted the money dishes. We believed the top two dishes were Eisbein and Bratwurst. Eisbein is a big ass pork shank served with sauerkraut and mash potatos, bomb diggity. Bratwurst is smoked grilled veal pork sausage with onions and German potato salad. Michelle also got a side of red cabbage. On the way out we were offered some farmer's bread with butter. After dropping our food off, I went to get German beer, the beer was Octoberfest Bier, Spaten. The beer was strong, but I looked at the alcohol content and it wasn't more than a Kona Brewing IPA. The big difference was that the Spaten had much more hops in the beer which made me feel inebriated a little more. The food was the bomb. I love German Food!!!
My second beer was on tap, it was the Sam Adams Oktoberfest brew. That got me feeling good. I listened to the music and people doing the chicken dance. Next year, we doing the chicken dance! There was also a beer hosting contest. The guy said last night, the longest someone held a beer at a 90 degree angle was 7.5 minutes. That is super long considering they had to hold a 44 oz stein filled with beer. There were these waitresses dressed in dirndl costumes, they were serving hards like jagermesiter and goldschlager. Michelle had a shot of goldschlager. After eating, we made our way back to the food station to get desert. There was cheesecake, apple cake, and black forest cake. We chose the apple cake. Although that cake was made from scratch, we both agreed that the black forest cake might have been better. After about 2.5 hours of having fun, we left. Before we left, we bought a German pretzel. It was so salty and dry. Too bad, I really wanted a good German pretzel.
Maybe one day will go to Munich to celebrate the real Oktoberfest. Would love to see Michelle's uncle and wife Lilia in Germany.
