Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen

After going on Instagram for many years, I got to preview some great cities and villages around the world. One such village was Lauterbrunnen. It is an Instagram sensation. It seems surreal. Steep cliffs, with a big waterfall, country side homes spaced out, and the Swiss Alps in the back drop, no wonder why JRR Tolkien was inspired to create his Lord of the Rings world.

To get to Lauterbrunnen, you have to get to the base of the Jungfrau Area known as Interlaken Ost Train Station. Interlaken is in its own right a destination to get to. But today, the focus was on the trip to Lauterbrunnen.

From Zürich to Interlaken took about 2 hours on train. When we got to Interlaken, we missed the tram to Lauterbrunnen, so we had to wait 30 minutes. While on the tram, we had to pass 2 villages to get to Lauterbrunnen. I felt excited because it is a place where people dream to be. I personally didn't have it on my bucket list, but getting there would be special. As soon as you exit the train station, you can see Staubbach Falls, this is the famous waterfall on Instagram. It spills from the steep cliffs of Alps. It was cold and rainy, but I layered well. It was Sunday, everything was closed down with the exception of a few stores and restaurants. I took some great video of Lauterbrunnen. It is a very small village and you could probably explore the entire village in a few hours. I can see why JRR Tolkien was so impressed by the area, the landscape is impressive. Although it doesn't seem like you are in another world, it does feel that you are in some place magical. The only people walking the street were tourist and they were trying to get their selfie's in.

Ahhh Staubbach Falls! There wasn't a heavy flow, it is a few hundred feet high. I was debating whether to get to the base, but it didn't seem worth it. In addition, it was raining, so footing wouldn't be that great. Instead, we headed back. On the way, the clouds cleared a little and I got to see the Swiss country side. This to me is what I envision Switzlerand to be. For some reason, maybe it is a farming thing, they got houses built on various hills. It looks very charming to an outsider.

Michelle and kids were hungry. We ate at a nearby Cafe. I can't remember the name. The prices were outrageous, just like all of Switzerland. My gulasch soup was 10 CHF. The bill came out to 60 CHF, Jared's chicken nuggets and french fries were 12 CHF. It was still cool to hang out and eat in Lauterbrunnen. It was so funny, while the waiter was in the back, we seen a family come in and take some cookies from the cookie jar and leave.

That is Lauterbrunnen in a nutshell. Time to go to Mürren.
